Comprehensive list of Winning Monopoly Deal Early Game Strategies

By Two Game Enthusiasts

This Monopoly Deal Strategy section has a list of strategies related to how best to utilize your cards for the win later in the game. These strategies do not break any of the official Monopoly Deal Rules and have been used by us and other monopoly deal players to successfully win.

Strategy:Acquire the Quick Two Card Sets

Try to acquire the two card full sets (Dark Blue, Brown, Utilities) to win with the least amount of plays. Since the game limits a player to only three plays per round the two card full sets are the most valuable so work to acquire those when ever possible. Check out the Monopoly Deal Rules and FAQ website to learn more about the different full sets available in the deck and the how many cards are available to create those sets.

Strategy:Wait to Lay the Quick Two Card Set Cards

Along the same lines as the strategy above, always wait as long as possible to play any of the cards from the two card full sets since they are most valuable.

Strategy:The Railroad Business Can be Good Strategy

Take on the “Railroad” business. A good strategy when you have two “Railroad” cards in your hand and other players have “Railroad” cards on the table is to keep yours in your hand. Opponents will likely pay using “Railroad” cards since “Railroad” cards are some of the least valuable cards and hard to acquire full sets. This can allow you to build a full set easily since people will most likely pay you with railroads and all you need is two on the table to complete the full set with the two in your hand.

Strategy:Sometimes an Action Card is More Valuable in the Bank Then in Your Hand

It may be more valuable to play Rent, House, Hotel, and Force Deal (rarely) cards into your Bank as money rather than holding onto them in your hand. A strong Bank account is very important early in the game and with games that go quickly it may not be possible to even play a House or Hotel action card. Using them as money can help build a Bank early on. Check out the Monopoly Deal Rules and FAQ website to learn more about what cards can and can't be played into your bank.

Strategy:A Rent Card Could be Worth More as Cash then the Rent it Brings in

Multi-colored wild Rent cards may not always be worth using for Rent unless you can get 3M from another player. By default it’s 3M in the Bank so if you have no properties that would give you 3M or more in Rent and your opponent(s) has plenty of money in the Bank it may be smarter to use it to build your own Bank.

Strategy:Don’t Always Give into the Pass Go Lottery

Don’t get addicted to the Pass Go lotto. While it’s always fun to pick up two more cards it’s even more fun to pick up five new cards. If you’re almost out of cards try to avoid using the pass go cards to collect two more cards. Instead lay them down in your Bank for small denomination charges and pick up five new cards next turn to hit the jackpot.

Strategy:Seven not Five is the Lucky Number – Five New Cards + Pass Go

When picking up five new cards, and one or more of those new cards are Pass Go action cards always use your Pass Go cards during that turn. Getting five new cards and then playing up to two Pass Go action cards in a single round means you’ve eaten up nine cards and the probability that you will acquire good cards in those nine new cards is very high. In addition it causes dread in your opponents and makes them think about the wonderful cards you might have acquired.Check out the Monopoly Deal Rules and FAQ website to learn more about the rules behind the number of cards picked up in a turn and how many cards a player can hold in his/her hand.

Strategy:Paying More Rent then is Asked for isn’t Always a Bad Thing

When being charged Rent by an opponent it might be wiser to pay with a bigger bill then you need to then to pay with all your smaller denominations.

Strategy Examples:if you have 2M, 1M, 1M, and a 5M bill in your Bank and an opponent charges you 4M it’s a better strategy to pay with the 5M even though you’re essentially overpaying, than to pay using your three other smaller bills. This helps make your Bank cushion last longer.
